Pennsylvania Teacher Decides Teaching Isn’t For Her After $900 Paycheck, ‘I make that much working at the library’

All that schooling for pennies

In our modern society, one of the biggest issues we face is we just don’t make enough. Imagine going to a four-year college (or more) only to be slapped with a meager wage. For most people, it’s not even enough to survive on. A Pennsylvania teacher recently had a valid crash-out when she discovered her teaching job isn’t paying her enough. It angered her so much she decided to quit her job on a whim.

“BYE TEACHING… FOREVER,” said the caption of the teacher’s video. TikTok user Bretak prefaces her video by announcing she already made the decision to hand in her resignation. She said she isn’t interested in giving her two-week notice or having a conversation with them. Why? Apparently, two weeks of work warranted her a paycheck of a measly $900. Given, there was a holiday day included in there. But $900? That sounds extravagantly low for two weeks of teaching children of the future.

“Who can live on what? I’m a grown a*s woman with bills, and a house, and responsibilities,” Bretak says. She argues we were always taught growing up we need to work hard and get a degree. Society fed information to us and told us it would pay off in the end. However, she said she experienced the exact opposite: “As soon as I started using the degree, I stopped succeeding.”

“I make that much working at the library. So it’s not that much money, but it is a lot less stress,” one commenter stated. And you don’t even need a degree to be a librarian!

“I never understood the pay off for jobs like teaching. My wife has a teaching degree (works at a bank) I have a degree in agriculture (I work in a factory). So many jobs just don’t pay enough to participate in this economy with dignity. Best of luck to you!” said another.

According to Bretak, not one thing has positively changed for her since she started using her degree. When you take away incentives and pay people so little for their hard work, it immediately doesn’t feel worth it. She says she has been “completely stagnant” with her degree, and now she’s resigning.

Though there’s only been a few updates since, she was told to finish out her last day after she ‘resigned.’ Hopefully, it’s onto better things for her!
