The Initiative has announced its first game, a reboot of Perfect Dark, at The Game Awards. Rumors of the series return and The Initiative’s involvement began to circulate this past Summer. And now, we know those rumors were true.
Before the reveal, we got footage of some of the development team discussing what the game will be like. It will be a first-person shooter. Though they intend for the viewpoint to focus on more than just shooting and will focus on an “eco sci-fi” theme. The teaser was purely cinematic with no gameplay. Also, the team gave no release date. You can check it out below:
If you’d like to hear more about the team’s thoughts on Perfect Dark, you can check out the Xbox blogpost. The team aims to “deliver a secret agent thriller set in a near-future world”.:
We have built the Perfect Dark team at The Initiative by bringing in some of the most talented game makers from around the industry who all share a passion for storytelling, world-building and creating memorable game experiences. With the full backing from Xbox Studios to re-imagine one of the best loved IPs from gaming history, we couldn’t be more excited to share some of our early ideas.”
The Initiative was formed 2 years ago at E3 2018. Former Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher leads the studio. The team has since added industry vets who have worked on titles like God of War, Apex Legends, and The Last of Us. Another Microsoft-owned studio, Rare, developed the original Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64. It was released in 2000 and received several sequels. But it hasn’t been seen since 2010’s Perfect Dark on the Xbox 360. The series centers on Joanna Dark, an agent of the Carrington Institute agency, who uncovers conspiracies of a rival corporation.
