The success of Persona 4 Golden PC port seems to have made SEGA more open to the possibilities of producing more PC versions of their titles. Here’s what SEGA SAMMY President and COO Haruki Satomi have to say about Persona 4 Golden PC performance, quoting PC Gamer:
“Because of [Steam version of Persona 4 Golden]’s critical acclaim and its low selling price, sales were much stronger than expected. We will continue to actively promote porting previously released titles to Steam and new platforms,”
Persona 4 Golden was first released on PS Vita on November 20, 2017, and added a bunch of new features to the base game. Including but not limited to a new character named Marie, new Social Link for Adachi, new difficulty levels, and new areas accessible with scooters. The title was touted to be PS Vita’s system seller; even if Sony themselves stopped supporting Vita in 2018.
And then about three years later out of nowhere SEGA and Atlus decided to do a rerelease on PC via Steam. In less than a month, it managed to sell 500,000 copies. In total, the Persona series managed to sell 1,2 million units for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2021. SEGA also noted that the North American version of the Phantasy Star Online 2 MMO “made a strong start” in their shareholders’ meeting presentation.
Not just content with the performance of newer releases, SEGA might also be preparing for more Persona and/or Shin Megami Tensei releases on PC. Satomi added,
“We are also negotiating with platform holders for new games in the future, and we’re considering ways to sell under favorable conditions for each title. Among them are measures such as preparing PC versions of the titles from the beginning, with multi-platform releases in mind.”
Interestingly, Persona 4 Golden was not the first Persona game to be released on PC. Previously Atlus ported the first Shin Megami Tensei: Persona game to PC back on March 25, 1999 — but as a Japan-exclusive move.
