Doctor Who alumni Peter Capaldi joins the Apple TV+ London-based thriller series Criminal Record. The eight-episode series will also star Cush Jumbo (Vera). It comes from the mind of BAFTA Award nominee Paul Rutman (Vera). It is currently in production in London and is produced by Tod Productions and STV Studios. Capaldi, Jumbo, Elaine Collins, and Rutman will executive produce. BAFTA winner Jim Loach (Save Me) will direct.
It follows two detectives who go against one another after an anonymous phone call drags them into an old murder case. While both are excellent at their work, they are in different stages of their careers. Detective Sergeant June Lenker, played by the Vera actress, is earlier in her career and is looking to make a name for herself. Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty, played by Peter Capaldi in the Apple TV+ drama, has connections and a legacy he is dead set on protecting.
The streamer describes the series as a “powerful, character-driven thriller set in the heart of contemporary London.” Thematically, it will tackle issues surrounding “race, institutional failure, and the quest to find common ground in a polarized Britain.”
