Reddit user BillyTheBrandMuffin is experiencing such a dilemma with his rented home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the situation is looking very dire. His bedroom’s ceiling isn’t just rotting; it’s exposed, with peeling wallpaper. In his video posted on r/Renters, it’s not hard to see why he believes the whole thing is on the verge of collapsing.
According to Billy, he’s been staying in the apartment for around 3 to 4 years with his mother and girlfriend. The ceiling allegedly began crumbling about a year ago, and every time it rains, it gets worse. “My mom doesn’t sleep [in] her room now because it’s a hazard,” he says, and it’s visually evident why.
Billy Claims His Mother Has Nowhere Else to Live
Billy says his landlord refuses to repair the ceiling, despite its severe damage. While moving out is a reasonable option, he adds that his mother has nowhere to stay and doesn’t want to live in a shelter. Now at a loss for what to do, he’s reached out to Reddit for advice.
“Fr. Building inspector, BBB, consumer protection, and a Tenant Law lawyer. You could own that building when you’re done with him,” remarked a user in the comments. “You could die if you stay there,” wrote a second. “There’s a nonzero chance a building inspection gets the unit or building condemned,” added a third.
Countless others express their fear of how dangerously close the ceiling looks to breaking down. Billy wrote in response, saying he believes the entire ceiling will collapse once winter comes. With so many people recommending he report the situation to Philadelphia officials, he repeats his fear: if he loses this apartment, he’ll have nowhere to go with his partner and mom.
“We don’t have the funds for another spot to stay, but we really don’t wanna stay in a shelter,” he wrote sadly. Unfortunately for him, Reddit believes he will have little choice but to leave the apartment in that shape.
