Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin dismissed questions about streamer Hasan Piker’s political relevance during a television interview. The exchange focused on Piker’s remarks about Hamas and his relationship with Democratic politics. Raskin called the controversy “an irrelevant distraction” while rejecting support for Hamas.
NBC News raised the issue after discussing Piker’s association with Abdul El-Sayed. The network then played a clip of Piker saying he would “vote for Hamas over Israel every single time.” The host asked whether the Democratic Party was broad enough to include Piker.
Raskin responded that he did not know whether Piker considered himself a Democrat. He also noted that Piker had criticized him for campaigning with other Democrats in Michigan. “I think all of that is an irrelevant distraction,” Raskin said.
“Obviously nobody supports Hamas, a terrorist organization,” he continued. Raskin also said people opposed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies. He then redirected the discussion toward democracy, national security and human rights in the United States.

Raskin’s effort to separate Piker from the Democratic Party drew competing arguments over whether the streamer belongs in the political conversation.
“Piker is the very face of the Democratic Party now,” one user wrote. Another challenged Raskin’s distancing directly: “If he’s not a Democrat and he’s an irrelevant distraction why is the University of Texas Democratic Party featuring him as a speaker two weeks before early voting starts?”
Others questioned whether Democrats would accept the same answer from Republicans. “I don’t think we’d let the same response slide from the Republicans regarding someone like Fuentes or one of their other crazy influencers,” one response stated. A separate user wrote, “Too bad. Hasan is your side’s idiot and you welcomed him into the political arena knowing his history.”
Other responses backed Raskin’s decision to move away from the subject. “He’s right. They’re running clips of a Twitch streamer like it’s a national emergency while people can’t afford rent or healthcare,” one user wrote. Another stated, “I think he answered as he should of. It is a distraction that many repeat over and over.”
The dispute leaves Piker’s relationship to Democratic candidates under continued scrutiny. Raskin did not identify Piker as a Democrat during the interview.
