The PlayStation 5 digital event was originally scheduled for earlier this month on June 4th, but PlayStation canceled the event in an effort to honor the protests taking place all over the world in the wake of George Floyd’s death. They took to their social media to announce the delay earlier this month:
We have decided to postpone the PlayStation 5 event scheduled for June 4th. While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.
Sony wasn’t the only company to do their part in highlighting and honoring the voices of protesters. CD Projekt Red delayed their June 11th Cyberpunk 2077 event until June 25th. Rockstar Games shut down their online servers for Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Online for two hours earlier this month. And Nickelodeon went off the air for eight minutes and 46 seconds to honor George Floyd.
Despite concerns over the current pandemic, the PlayStation 5 is still set to release during Holiday 2020. Through the reveal event, gamers are eager to see the actual console while potentially learning the price point, release date, and potential launch titles for the highly-anticipated console.
The PlayStation 5 digital event will air on Thursday, June 11th, 2020, at 1 PM PST / 4 PM PST / 9 PM BST.
