Sony has just announced that it has acquired Savage Game Studios, a mobile game developer, with the aim to expand the PlayStation audience to more people than ever before.

Savage Game Studios’ co-founder and CEO Michail Katkoff said that PlayStation will respect their vision for the future and are not afraid to take chances. That, and the ability to tap into all of PlayStation’s IPs, will give the developer a vast catalog to pick from for future titles.

PlayStation’s console development will not be involved with Savage Game Studios; the developer will work independently and continue mainly working on mobile devices.

Sony has been expanding outside the console industry in recent years, and Savage Game Studios is another example. Not only has Sony ported many of its biggest exclusives like God of War and Spider-Man to PC, but Esports as well. Sony bought Evo last year, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, which took place last month. Additionally, there have been rumors of a PlayStation launcher in the works for Windows.

Mobile is not something PlayStation has done before; besides its Remote Play, PS App, and cloud streaming, Sony doesn’t have a mobile presence. Savage Game Studios will soon change that fact. And it seems Sony isn’t alone in recognizing the importance of mobile gaming, as Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard was also driven by the company’s mobile potential.

The Future Of Savage Game Studios

Along with the announcement of the acquisition, Savage Game Studios has already announced that it is working on a new AAA mobile title. But the studio also said that it is too early to give any further details about their project. Head of PlayStation Hermen Hulst said:

“it’s too early to reveal more, but I’m so excited for when they’ll be able to. They were founded a few years ago with the goal of fearlessly exploring bold new ideas. We share their tireless ambition to innovate.”

It is rumored that PlayStation is working on bringing Discord voice chat support to its consoles natively. This will allow for cross-platform communication between PS, Xbox, and PC.
