Pokémon has remained a global phenomenon for decades, and with that popularity, the Pokémon Trading Card Game has exploded into something far bigger than many people ever expected. While the cards were originally marketed toward kids who wanted to collect their favorite characters or play casual games with friends, the scene today looks very different. For many adults, Pokémon TCG has become less about nostalgia or fun and more about profit. As demand has increased, so has the presence of scalpers, and a recent video involving two Maryland men highlights just how tense things have become.
Scalping has turned Pokémon cards into a competitive market, with certain packs selling out almost instantly. In many cases, scalpers buy up entire stocks, leaving nothing behind for kids or casual fans. That frustration came into focus in a video recorded in Maryland, where two Maryland men were seen causing a scene in front of a Pokémon vending machine.
In parts of the United States, Pokémon vending machines allow customers to purchase trading cards directly from a machine, similar to buying snacks or drinks. These machines are meant to give fans easier access to cards without worrying about store limits or long lines. In this case, however, the vending machine became the center of a heated standoff between the two Maryland men, both of whom appeared eager to get their hands on the cards first.
According to the video, neither of the Maryland men seemed interested in casually picking up a pack or two. Instead, the situation suggested they were trying to buy as much stock as possible, likely to resell later for profit. One of the Maryland men, wearing a yellow beanie, was already using the machine when the other man, wearing a brown jacket, approached.
The beanie-wearing man repeatedly pushed the other away and told him to back off. The man in the brown jacket refused and attempted to pull the first man away from the vending machine. The image of two grown Maryland men struggling over Pokémon cards struck many viewers as absurd.
Online reactions were swift and largely critical. Many people said the scene perfectly illustrated how scalping has damaged what was once a fun and accessible hobby. One viewer wrote, “I live in a small city in Australia, and our Pokémon vending machines are always full. I only ever see kids using them. This is ridiculous.”
Another commenter claimed to recognize one of the Maryland men, writing, “I know the guy in the beanie. He sells used toys, comics, and cards out of a big barn.” That detail only fueled criticism, as some viewers felt it confirmed that the cards were being taken out of circulation purely for resale.
Others expressed frustration on behalf of genuine fans, arguing that scalpers have made it nearly impossible for collectors and kids to enjoy Pokémon TCG the way it was meant to be enjoyed. To many, the video of the two Maryland men was not just embarrassing, but a symbol of how greed has overshadowed fun in the Pokémon card world.
