Life gets expensive in Pokemon, and a broke trainer won’t get far. That poses a challenge for the many free-to-play gamers who enjoy Pokemon Go. It’s not just Battle Passes and Raid Passes you need to fill your Pokedex. It’s also Eggs, Incubators, Star Pieces, and even Lure Modules. If you want to be one of the greatest trainers, you’re going to need a small fortune to keep your crew supplied. Getting a thriving economy going can be difficult, but having a strong team (and knowing a few tricks) can make things easier. Here’s how to farm PokeCoins fast in Pokemon Go.

Pokemon Gym Defenders you can use to get Pokecoins in Pokemon Go

The most common way to farm PokeCoins in Pokemon Go is by defending gyms. By placing one of your Pokemon in a gym belonging to your faction (Valor, Instinct, or Mystic), you can start generating a stream of PokeCoins. You’ll earn 1 PokeCoin for every 10 minutes that your Pokemon defends a gym, to a maximum of 50 PokeCoins per day. It therefore takes about 8 hours to collect your maximum PokeCoin reward for the day. Earning PokeCoins this way poses a few problems, but nothing you and your favorite Snorlax can’t overcome.

You don’t need the best Legendary Pokemon to defend a gym, but having a strong Pokemon helps ensure they won’t be knocked out too early. If a rival team owns the gym, you’ll need to defeat them before placing one of your own Pokemon there, which adds another layer of difficulty. Here’s what you can do to make farming PokeCoins through gyms easier:

  1. Deploy Pokemon to 20 gyms
  2. Use Golden Razz Berries to refill your defender’s lost Motivation
  3. Stop restoring your Pokemon once it’s defended for 8 hours

You can further speed up the process by coordinating with a player on a rival team to exchange gyms. You only receive your earned PokeCoins when your defender is defeated, so you’re dependent upon other players for your income. By trading gyms as soon as you max out your PokeCoin reward and are ready to cash out, you can ensure that you both make an efficient profit. It might feel like a Team Rocket plot, but it works.

Other Ways to Earn PokeCoins

Currently, there are only two other ways to get PokeCoins in Pokemon Go: buying them or completing surveys. By signing up with one of the various third-party survey apps and completing surveys, it’s possible to earn PokeCoins, but we don’t recommend that option. You earn far too few Coins for the time these surveys take, and giving up personal information for so small a reward just isn’t worth it. Although buying this premium currency from the shop is the fastest option, it’s out of reach for FTP gamers. You’re simply better off focusing on gym defense. Here are some tips to help:

  • Stockpile restorative items for your defenders
  • Always be ready to replace a defender once they faint
  • Keep enemy defender weaknesses and Motivation in mind when preparing attackers

Although shopping can get expensive in Pokemon GO, it’s still easier than trying to get your hands on a Topsun Charizard. Being patient is key. It took Ash 25 seasons to become World Champion. It’ll only take a few days to rack up the coins you need for your next item. Anything to make Evee happy.
