Minnesota Police, Sheriff’s Deputies Seize Food and Water From Anti-ICE Protesters Outside Federal Detention Center: ‘How Is This Not Straight Up Theft?’

The protest in Minneapolis, Minnesota, against ICE agents has continued to draw attention, with demonstrators saying they do not want the country to forget what happened to Renee Good and other Minnesotans who they believe were targeted by ICE. The gathering, held outside a federal detention center, has remained peaceful, but tensions have grown as the Minnesota police presence increased and interactions with protesters escalated.

According to a video shared on Reddit, a protester recorded what they described as a new and troubling development. Minnesota police officers and local sheriff’s deputies were seen confiscating supplies brought by demonstrators. These supplies reportedly included food, water, heat sources, and tables, items protesters said were necessary to endure long hours outdoors during winter conditions. The Minnesota police told protesters the items were not allowed and proceeded to remove them.

The protester recording the video suggested the action was meant to pressure demonstrators to leave or stop protesting altogether. With cold temperatures and limited shelter, the loss of basic supplies made it significantly harder for people to remain on site. They said it was clear that people higher up did not like the protesting in front of a federal building, particularly demonstrations opposing what they described as ICE lawlessness tied to Trump-era immigration orders.

The same protester said the incident showed that the Minnesota police were not acting in the interest of the citizens participating in the protest. During the video, an alleged ICE vehicle was also seen driving past the demonstration, prompting loud boos from the crowd.

Online, many users expressed shock and anger at the footage, questioning how Minnesota police officers could legally confiscate protesters’ belongings. One user wrote,“How is this not straight up theft?” Others said they were not surprised, arguing that police departments have historically sided with ICE during immigration-related protests.

One commenter pointed to past demonstrations, saying, “Anyone that was involved in the Occupy protests could have told you that this is exactly what happens. Plenty of footage around of the cops raiding protests and destroying everything in sight while they haul people away for loitering and disturbing the peace charges.”

Another user shared a personal experience involving a conversation with a Minnesota sheriff’s deputy during the protest. The user described calmly raising concerns about ICE vehicles driving aggressively close to protesters. “ICE was whipping in and out of the lot very close to protesters, very intentionally trying to start things, and it was getting very dangerous. One came within a foot of me,” the user said.

According to the account, the sheriff’s deputy responded repeatedly that there was nothing they could do. “I said, ‘Even if you happen to talk to them, can you tell them to stop? Someone will get hurt by this.’ He just said, ‘Sorry, we can’t do anything about it.’ We went back and forth a couple of times like that,” the user wrote. The user also questioned why ICE vehicles were allowed to drive without license plates, front or back, and asked if they could remove their own plates as well. “He just chuckled and gave a non-answer,” the user said.
