Thursday evening, Federal Immigration Officers in Portland, Oregon were involved in an altercation that ended in violence. Two people were shot by the agents. This occurred mere hours after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said that an ICE agent involved in a similar shooting in Minneapolis had ‘absolute immunity.’
In the hours following the shooting, social media platforms like TikTok and X erupted as the news broke. The mayor of Portland, Keith Wilson, called the incident “another deeply troubling incident” and referenced the Minneapolis shooting as well. The shooting in Minneapolis has resulted in protests across the city and national concern.
In a post on X, Oregon senator Jeff Merkley said that he viewed the shooting in Portland as a “huge concern” and asked that protesters remain peaceful as ‘Trump wants to generate riots.” Merkley also told residents, “don’t take the bait.”
What exactly happened?
Details about the shooting are still being released. However, officials have confirmed that a man and a woman who were involved have been taken to a local hospital. Border Patrol Agents have stated that the shooting occurred following a traffic stop. The stop was conducted as part of a search for a Venezuelan national suspected of being part of a prostitution ring.
The Department of Homeland Security also posted on X acknowledging the incident. The post stated that “the passenger of the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting.” Posts showed the mixed opinions of people on social media. One user simply posted that people should “stop trying to run over federal officers.“
Other local officials in Portland have issued statements urging citizens to remain calm and to act with purpose. Meanwhile, another X user wrote of the ICE agents that “these thugs are going to continue to shoot people.” Others blamed Democrat politicians, accused the ICE agents of lying, and called for prayer.
This shooting comes following a U.S. military operation in Venezuela that has drawn its own share of criticism from officials and observers. In addition, statements by President Donald Trump regarding his desire to acquire Greenland as a U.S. territory have also contributed to international tensions.
