A Power Rangers movie reboot had only been released in 2017 – but this isn’t stopping movie executives from rebooting the franchise again after the previous film’s poor commercial reception.
This news won’t be surprising to those who have read Dacre Montgomery’s Reddit AMA from last July (the guy who played Jason in the 2017 flick). But what might be more surprising is the way Paramount is handling the next reboot. It turns out; it’s taking us back to the past.
Or the 90’s to be more exact. Yes, that’s right – the new film is going to be set in the ’90s. This is fitting since that’s when the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers series was set (not that it had much choice. That was the era in which it was produced!)
Announced by The Hollywood Reporter, the new Power Rangers script is being penned by Patrick Burleigh, who is also working on Peter Rabbit 2 and has written Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). But those who love their Netflix may well recognize the man who is currently in negotiations to direct – Jonathan Entwhistle.
Entwhistle is best known as the creator of the hit series, The End of the F**king World, which ran for two seasons. At only the age of 35, he has made quite a name for himself. As pointed out on his website, his music video for Seafret’s ‘Oceans’ – which starred Maisie Williams – has been viewed over 45 million times.
Currently, the only story tidbit we’re getting from The-Powers-That-Be is that the new Power Rangers reboot involves time travel. Now, this is hardly telling us much (how many films can you name use time travel?), but it’s a start. It at least implies we see something a bit different from the purely present-based 2017 flick.
With a production budget of $100 million, the last attempt to reboot the franchise earned $140 million worldwide. Director Dean Israelite blamed the PG-13 rating, feeling that “parents were unsure if they could bring their kids to the movie.”
As to what rating the Power Rangers reboot will have (and other info), we will have to stay tuned.
