Publisher Bethesda has released a new launch trailer for Prey in advance of the game’s release this week. The first-person shooter developed by Arkane Studios releases May 5, 2017, for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The first hour of the game is also now available as a free demo to play. The Prey launch trailer features mostly combat gameplay footage with the tag-line to “Fight the Invasion”. Those words have increased gravitas as much of the footage on space station Talos I shows the close proximity of earth to the station. As a result when we hear that Talos I is a laboratory and that the experiment failed there is little doubt as to what is at stake, humanity itself.
The danger on Talos I is obvious in the Prey launch trailer as you fill the shoes of Morgan Yu, the lead scientist on Talos I. Yu battles a serious alien menace that appears to be both hunting and infecting the remaining crew on the station. The aliens are a collective of races known as the Typhon, much as the Covenant is a series of alien races in the Halo franchise, each with their own distinct physiology, strengths and attack method. Exploding heads anyone? To tackle the alien problem Yu takes advantage of some superhuman abilities granted to him by humanity’s ability to harness some of the Typhon’s skills and aptitudes. One of the more bizarre of these skills is the apparent ability of Yu to transform his body into a turret to fill the aliens with some serious lead and plasma.

Prey has had a somewhat checkered development with the license changing hands and developers multiple times since Prey 2 was announced over 10 years ago. Prey 2 never came to light although, through a non-circuitous path, that title has now morphed 2017’s Prey, sharing the same title as the first game in the series released in 2006 and developed by Human Head Studios. That title which graced the Xbox 360 was published by 2K Games.
