Princess Diana‘s ex-lover James Hewitt speaks out against the royal feud between Prince Harry and Prince William decades after their mom’s death. For years, Harry and William, the sons of the late Princess of Wales, have remained at loggerheads, the rift fueled by past grievances and scathing public revelations Harry has made about the royal family via various mediums. The resulting feud has prevailed far longer than anyone foresaw, and not even the royal family’s most trying year yet could heal the brothers and repair their once-thriving bond.
James Hewitt, Princess Diana’s former lover shared his thoughts on the royal feud in a recent interview, also revealing how the late Princess would have handled her warring sons. The 66-year-old appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain to discuss the Operation Safedrop, an initiative focused on delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine. During their interaction, host Richard Madeley asked Hewitt how the late Princess would have handled her feuding sons and if she would have successfully “made a rapprochement possible.” In response, Hewitt revealed Princess Diana would have done her best to push for a royal reconciliation between Prince Harry and Prince William. He divulged,
“I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it, and she’d do her best to try and get them together.”

Hewitt Reflects on Princess Diana’s Family and Health Struggles
James Hewitt, who had a five-year affair with Princess Diana from 1986 to 1991, also opened up about the late royal’s mental health struggles. According to him, while she lived in a time when opening up about her struggles was frowned upon, the world has since progressed, creating an avenue for one to freely discuss “those kind of problems,” which is a good thing.
Princess Diana opened up about her affair with James Hewitt during her infamous BBC Panorama interview in 1995. He admitted to speaking to the mom of two at least once after her BBC interview, and their interaction had been “distant.” Although their fling had already ended before the interview, Hewitt admitted that the Princess’ revelation created problems for him on personal levels, which he strives to move on from.

Diana had to deal with her own troubling aftermath as well. Aside from deepening her rift with the royal family, the mom of two, who was married to the then-Prince Charles between 1981 and 1992, has had the paternity of her younger son Harry questioned even in death. Several conspiracy theorists have suggested James Hewitt is the true biological father of Prince Harry, even drawing up phenotypical similarities to back the claims.
James Hewitt on Prince Harry’s Paternity Rumors
James Hewitt himself has addressed the long-standing rumors of his paternal link to Princess Diana’s son Prince Harry, clarifying once and for all that he was not the prince’s biological father. Asked why the rumors have continued thriving for decades, Hewitt responded that “it sells papers,” which explained why it kept recurring in the media despite existing proof he wasn’t.
James Hewitt’s ITV interview comes after former royal aide Jason Knauf went candid about the impact of Prince Harry and Prince William’s feud on those close to them. Addressing the royal feud in an interview on 60 Minutes Australia, Knauff admitted it was difficult having the brothers’ feud play out in the public eye.

He revealed how “hard and sad” it felt to watch the relationship between the duo fall apart, especially for those who knew both of them. Although Harry has voiced his intentions to mend things with his brother and the royal family, William has remained completely silent on the issue, sticking to the royal family’s “never complain, never explain” policy. An intervention from a revered family figure is certainly long overdue.
