The Democratic party has offered little meaningful resistance as Donald Trump and Elon Musk steamroll the U.S. federal government. The same cannot be said for community organizers and activists. Crowds of demonstrators flooded the streets of NYC on President’s Day to protest Donald Trump. With pride flags and “Abolish ICE” signs on prominent display, it’s obvious what brought many people into the streets. Fascist Executive Orders and policies have flowed from the Trump White House uninterrupted. As military aircraft fly migrants to the camps of Guantanamo Bay, the time to act is now.
NYC Defies Trump With President’s Day Protest
From banning books to firing inspectors general, Trump has given his opponents plenty to protest. Signs depicting Trump and Musk as kings signify one of the biggest problems. By seemingly flouting federal law at every turn, the pair has created a constitutional crisis. Meanwhile, by insisting upon reaching across the aisle, Democrats and other liberals have collapsed in the face of opponents who aren’t interested in talking. The President’s Day protest in NYC, however, proves that others aren’t giving up.
Of course, even a large protest like the President’s Day demonstration won’t win the opposition over. That isn’t the goal. Demonstrations draw international attention to the ongoing crisis in the U.S. They also show many stand in defiance of the president and his fascist allies. A Reddit post about the protest by @_II_I_I__I__I_I_II_ garnered over 10k upvotes and numerous comments in support of the protesters. As one commenter said,
Remember that we are righteous. The b**tards will not grind us away. Freedom forever. You are not alone.
Giving up is easy. Fighting is hard. As the government puts increasing pressure upon anti-fascists, leftists, unions, and anyone who would stand in its way, protests will only become more dangerous. Nevertheless, community organizers and activists in the U.S. have a long history of digging in their heels and fighting the good fight no matter what. Now, more than ever, they’ll need the support of ordinary people ready to stand with them.
