Sometimes, DEI has been a scapegoat that Trump and J.D. Vance’s regime has targeted, in many ways unfairly or unjustly. Oftentimes, folks of color are great for the job, and the stripping of these policies is going to cause the actual best people for the job losing it for no real reason other than blatant racism. Well, that hasn’t stopped Ohio University from citing DEI as the reason for blocking a Black Alumni Reunion that was coming up soon.
According to NBC4i, only a couple of short weeks after Ohio University president Lori Gonzales defended their students’ protests against the anti-DEI legislation in the government, they are showing their true colors. Terry Frazier and Jillian Causey, co-chairs of the Bar Alumni Planning Committee issued the following statement.
While this is difficult news to share, we remain committed to honoring the legacy and accomplishments of Ohio University’s Black alumni. We will continue working with the University to develop a plan that aligns with evolving federal and state guidelines while preserving the significance of this gathering.
They then pointed at the Department of Education’s letter that threatened federal funding to their institution, and in an act of cowardice, they buckled. Folks on Reddit, in a post created by user toomuchtostop on the r/Ohio Reddit page, were not pleased.
“This is an over reaction, 100%. If they can’t have a Black Alumni group then the Young Republicans, Chess Club, fraternities and sororities, etc. must also be disallowed to have student associations and alumni reunions. Wow. The pendulum is swinging hard lately.”
“So black people can’t gather because…? You wouldn’t ban any other alumn reunion. Guess what? Black people exist whether you like “DEI” or not. I’m so gd sick of this”
“I can’t even find the words.. these are Americans. Who went to our school. But they can’t have a reunion because “black” is in the name? That’s the reason, you’re not even going to think of some bs reason like they used to? Just out in the open now, huh? We are on the knife-edge on top of a cliff, swaying in the wind. And at the bottom of the cliff is the death of thousands/millions and the destruction of our country.”
As you can see, nobody is pleased by this, and the thought is repulsive. Whatever excuse the Ohio University leadership throws out there, doesn’t really hold water when they contradict themselves with all the other things they aren’t currently blocking.
