Trick or treating is a special time of the year where communities can get together, wear creepy costumes, and have some fun during the Halloween season. But that fun can quickly turn to frustration when the cherished age old tradition is abused, and the trick or treaters are rude and disrespectful to their neighbors. That’s exactly what happened recently in Texas, when two young adults, who appear to be wearing white supremacist attire, were caught on camera hurling racist slurs at a Black neighbour.
It’s important to note that while the video does say that the incident occurred in Memphis, TN, the original creator stated that the incident actually took place in Texas. In one of the comments under the video, a commenter named DEE3🧛🏾♨︎℠ states, “This was in Texas btw guys the original creator of the video stated it.”
In the video, a caption provides some context, and reads, “Teens Say [expletive] at Black Woman’s Camera“, and sees two young kids stood on the doorstep of a neighbour while they’re out trick or treating at nighttime. Both teens are wearing long robes, reminiscent of white supremacist uniforms, though they could also be interpreted as liturgical vestments that a priest would wear. One kid is wearing a red robe and is holding a large crucifix, while the other is wearing a white robe. Both teens are also sporting a faux bishop’s hat, which is pretty eerie to say the least, especially when you hear the offensive language that they deem appropriate to say while trick or treating.
It sounds like the person who answered the door says, “You’re down bad for that candy, mate.” while the two kids stand there awkwardly for a few moments. The one kid who is wearing white takes a step back, and quickly utters the N-word before turning heel and booking it. Both hurry on their way, and you can hear them laughing to themselves as they make a quick exit. Thing is, likely unbeknownst to them, the neighbor has a camera installed, so the entire interaction was recorded.
The clip then focuses in on the kid dressed in white, and the words, “Recognize him?” flashes up on screen before the footage comes to an end.
As expected, social media reactions have been incredibly critical of the two trick or treating boys at the heart of the drama. Over on TikTok, one user wrote, “White fatigue” while another added, “The reason this country is so far behind“. Elsewhere, a further netizen clarified that it did indeed take place in Texas, writing, “It was in Texas“. A fourth comment on Reddit couldn’t believe what the teens were wearing and declared, “Those outfits look Klan-like, but now with added religious beliefs.” A fifth on Instagram penned, “They laughing, but in a couple of days they will be crying“.
While the teens’ identities remain unknown, the footage highlights the enduring issues of racism and entitlement among younger generations, even in an age when awareness and education about racial injustice is more widespread than ever.
