Floridians have expressed concern on social media after two counties reported seeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents near polling places as early voting began. As the elections approach, concerns about voter intimidation and interference from the federal government are growing, and many Floridians feel that the coming days could get tense.
As reported by CBS News, election supervisors from Leon County and Monroe County saw ICE agents and vehicles near polling sites. After seeing the agents, both supervisors contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which they said seemed to take the cases seriously.
Current federal laws prohibit armed agents from conducting activities near polling places unless they are deemed necessary to keep order. Therefore, ICE should not be operating near these locations under normal circumstances. Reports also indicated that immigration advocacy groups viewed the move as a potential intimidation tactic.
Floridians Are Not Happy With ICE’s Presence
Folks on Reddit’s r/Florida reacted negatively to reports of ICE agents near polling places and quickly blamed the Donald Trump administration. One of them wrote: “Republicans know they don’t offer what benefits the people. They know they have to cheat to win. Disgusting attack on democracy.”
To others, this only highlighted the strength of the political opposition to Trump: “If voting didn’t matter, these goons wouldn’t be trying to scare us. Get out there and vote!” Another person said: “Republicans engaging in voter intimidation because they can’t win a free, fair election.”
Others criticized the idea of sending agents to polling sites: “I don’t get it. Of all the places illegal immigrants may be found, I would think a voting site would be very low on the list. You’re not a citizen; you can’t vote, why hang around there?” Someone responded: “They also realize that any person who isn’t white knows they can be falsely imprisoned by ICE, and this will keep a percentage of them away from the polls.”
Hopefully, this will be the last time agents are reported near polling sites in Florida, but it remains to be seen whether similar incidents will continue to be reported to the authorities over the next couple of weeks.
