Everything is not as it seems in the town of Dusky Rivers. This is the setting of Snot Bubbles Productions’ retro horror adventure game Boreal Tenebrae. A local woman named Sarah recently vanished after performing a strange rite. Now, it’s up to her sister Bree, the other residents of Dusky Rivers, and, of course, the player to bring her back. The first act of the game is currently available on Steam, and soon more players will be able to experience the adventure. Publisher RedDeerGames announced today that Boreal Tenebrae will launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch on April 8.
The game’s arrival on these platforms has been in the works for some time. The Xbox and Switch versions of Boreal Tenebrae were originally slated to release sometime in 2021, but this date was quietly pushed back. With a specific release date in sight, interested players may wonder what to expect.
What is Boreal Tenebrae?
Boreal Tenebrae bills itself as “a dark retro adventure in the style of 90s PlayStation 1 classics, with cartoonish graphics and synth wave music to deepen the atmosphere of horror.” According to the RedDeerGames website:
“Explore a diseased town where everything is unusual. Strange boxes that emit hypnotic static appeared in town. Some citizens, including Sarah, have been absorbed by this mysterious object and never come back.”
It’s the player’s job to piece together exactly what happened. According to today’s announcement, players will experience events from multiple perspectives:
“Each of the characters looks at the town differently, has a contrasting story and diverse insights, but each of them is important in the attempt to solve the mystery of the anomaly that Sarah was accused of causing.”
This retro horror adventure is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch on April 8. Boreal Tenebrae Act I: “I Stand Before You, A Form Undone” is currently available on Steam.
