At today’s Nintendo Indie World Direct, the company revealed that a spin-off of the Crypt of the NecroDancer would be coming to the Switch; this game, called Rift of the NecroDancer, will take the rhythm series in a new direction rather than being a direct sequel to the other NecroDancer game. Brace Yourself Games, a Canadian independent game studio, is still developing the game series.
In the original Crypt of the NecroDancer, players must explore roguelike dungeons while only performing actions to the best. Paired with an amazing soundtrack, this concept created an extremely unique approach to rhythm gaming. Now, Brace Yourself Games seems to be taking a more story-based approach with the new game, Rift of the NecroDancer. This won’t be the first NecroDancer spin-off, with Cadence of Hyrule releasing before; however, it will be the furthest departure from the original series.
Rift Of The NecroDancer Is Coming To Switch
In the Rift of the NecroDancer announcement trailer at Indie World, some gameplay is revealed, showcasing some more traditional rhythm game formats. The protagonist, named Cadence, must hit various directional arrows to the beat to stop creatures from attacking as they descend in a fashion similar to Guitar Hero. Additionally, the structure of the sections will act as a new form of combat, showing health meters and various attacks.
This Game Is A New Direction For The Series
On top of this, Rift of the NecroDancer will include a new story mode as well. Players can experience a visual novel-style story, complete with new characters, visuals, and enemies. The game also features another rhythm game mode where players must complete various tasks to the rhythm of a song. This style of gameplay will be very familiar to fans of Nintendo’s Rhythm Heaven franchise. It is unclear, however, to what capacity these modes will be in the game.
Rift of the NecroDancer will be released sometime in 2023, with no exact date confirmed; as of the Indie World announcement, the game will come to Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam.
