In a statement to HollywoodLife, Robert revealed he was deeply distressed by Leandro De Niro’s death. The Academy Award winner thanked the public for the big show of love and condolences. He concluded by pleading with everyone to allow the De Niro family some time to mourn the loss of their loved one. In another statement to HollywoodLife, Drena spoke similar words, revealing Leandro’s death brought immeasurable shock and sadness to the family. Most importantly, Drena asked for privacy as the family processed the “inconsolable grief.”
Details of Robert De Niro’s Grandson’s Death
Robert and Drena’s statements came a day after Leandro De Niro’s death. According to a police report, the authorities responded to a 911 call at a one-bedroom apartment in the Cipriani Club residences on 55 Wall Street. Upon arrival at the location, Leandro was found on a chair, unconscious and unresponsive. There and then, EMS pronounced the 20-year-old dead. A police source reported that there was a white substance found near Leandro’s body, and there were no signs of trauma.
It is unclear what the reported substance was. However, the source revealed Leandro was housesitting, and drugs and drug paraphernalia were found. As a result, Leandro’s death is being investigated as an overdose. Meanwhile, the concierge at 55 Wall Street revealed the house Leandro was found dead in was where he lived. The concierge said Leandro lived alone in the upscale sixth-floor apartment, renting the unit for less than a year.
The concierge also described Leandro as a friendly young man who would always say hello whenever he came and went. Since the tragedy, many of the deceased’s family members and friends have paid tribute. Leandro’s mother was the first on the list, as she poured out her heart in an emotional Instagram post. Drena described Leandro as “her joy, heart, and all that was pure and real in her life.” While she admitted that moving on would be hard, Drena promised to share the love and light Leandro made her feel. Leandro died at a young age, but he will never be forgotten.
