We’ve all been starved of anything A Nightmare on Elm Street related since the 2010 reboot starring Jackie Earle Haley. The reboot itself did not hit the mark with critics and didn’t ever justify a sequel, no bad thing. It was OK as a movie, I suppose, but really missed the humor from the originals.
Since then, the A Nightmare on Elm Street rights have reverted back to the Craven estate, and chances have never been higher for fans to see Freddy Krueger don that iconic jumper again.
Original star Robert Englund knows a bit or two about the character having played him since 1984 in a number of films and on TV. He even made an appearance as the character in 2018 thanks to The Goldbergs.
Englund has recently been talking to SYFY about the series and his hopes to see a prequel. Here’s what he had to say:
“I think that the franchise probably deserves a really good prequel. There’s never been an entire movie devoted to Freddy before he was burned and the crimes and getting caught by the police and going on trial and getting away with killing children. We know that he was set free, so to me, the great part in the prequel is gonna be the lawyers, the lawyers that get him off. These ambulance-chasing lawyers (or whatever they are) that get Freddy off and then, of course, the ending would be the vigilante parents burning him. That would be the end of the movie, but I think there’s a great story there somewhere … I think it could sustain 90 minutes.”
It sounds like Freddy had better get Saul Goodman on the case if he wants to get off those charges.
I’m not sure how I’d feel about A Nightmare on Elm Street prequel. Whatever we do get, I’d absolutely love to see Robert Englund back in the role.
Unfortunately, the star feels he is now too old to carry the franchise, which is understandable as he is 73 this year. That said, he did indicate a willingness to film a cameo or even voice the character in an animated version. This is now what I am hoping for.
No doubt we will learn more about the franchise soon with an inevitable reboot coming sooner rather than later.
I know that nobody will ever epitomize Freddy more than Robert Englund, but let us know in the comments who you would like to see the star as Krueger instead.
Steve is the resident Englishman, just don’t hold that against him. He’s been playing games for the best part of 3 decades and will continue to do so for as long as his thumbs hold up. When they no longer work, he’ll still find a way to play Resident Evil 2. Lover of most things nerdy Steve also likes sports. Go sports!
