Rocket League is a game with a thriving community of active players. There’s so much replayability the game offers with it’s action from game to game and workshop for those on PC. It’s sitting at a 50,000 player count consistently on PC alone, so it’s clear that many find it a solid title. Psyonix wants to up that player count more than it already has with their news today. Rocket League is going free to play across all platforms and will be available on the Epic Games Store the same day. This is exciting news for those who haven’t played, as they finally have the chance to now.
For console players, this won’t change things much. It’ll simply go free to play in its respective store, and new players can download the game right from there. As for PC players though, the game is going exclusively to the Epic Games Store. You’ll be able to pick it up for free there, while Steam sales will be discontinued. If you already own a copy of Rocket League on Steam, you’ll be able to play through cross-play like usual on Steam. There just won’t be additional Steam players from this point forward. This choice seems confusing to me personally, since you’d want as many people as possible. They could’ve had it on both platforms, but it also isn’t my place to say. Regardless, you get the game for free so I don’t imagine many are complaining.
If you already own Rocket League, you special loot for buying the game before it went free. You’re awarded the Legacy Status, which includes all Rocket League-branded DLC before free to play, a title, two boosts, a set of wheels, and a banner. This will let you stand out from the free to play crowd, and is a form of thanks for supporting the game by purchasing it.
This is good news for Rocket League and its future success, as its player base will thrive immensely. We’d love to hear your thoughts though. Do you think Rocket League moving to free to play is a good choice? Will you be one of the players jumping in as part of the offer?
