Rockstar Games has officially announced that GTA 6 has been delayed, with the new release date now set for May 26, 2026. The update was shared through the studio’s official X account, confirming that the game will no longer meet its previously expected launch window of late 2025.
In the announcement, Rockstar acknowledged that the delay would come as a disappointment to fans. The studio stated it needs more time to deliver the level of quality expected from a new Grand Theft Auto title and thanked players for their continued support. Rockstar added that with every release, its goal is to exceed expectations, and GTA 6 is no exception. Although no one can disagree with any of the things said by the team, it sure is disappointing that the release window was announced far to early, setting incorrect expectations in the first place.
This shift comes after Take-Two Interactive reaffirmed in February that Grand Theft Auto VI was still on track to launch in “Fall of Calendar 2025” and will not be delayed. The publisher called 2025 a significant year, citing the anticipated launch of GTA 6 alongside titles like Civilization VII, Mafia: The Old Country, and Borderlands 4.
The announcement about GTA 6 getting delayed may prompt scheduling shifts across the industry yet again. A previous report suggested other publishers were waiting for Rockstar’s confirmation before finalizing their own fall 2025 release plans. Now that the game has officially moved to 2026, studios may begin announcing their timelines with more confidence.
One notable adjustment came from Borderlands 4, which was recently moved up from September 23 to September 12. The change sparked speculation about Rockstar’s influence, though Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has since denied any direct connection.
The news is especially frustrating for PC players, as Rockstar has historically released PC versions of its titles several years after console launches. Based on this pattern, the release date of the PC version of GTA 6 is probably around 2028.
While players have expressed disappointment across social media, the delay is unlikely to affect long-term interest. Grand Theft Auto VI remains one of the most anticipated games in development.
