The movie will focus on a rogue team as they infiltrate the Death Star and steal the plans for the space station that the resistance has in A New Hope. The first trailer shows off new characters, armies of stormtroopers and a very imposing looking Death Star. The film looks to be staying true to the vision of the original trilogy while delivering a much darker and bleaker tone.
The film will be helmed by Gareth Edwards, director of the 2014 Godzilla remake. The new cast will be comprised of Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Elysium), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Forest Whitaker (The Butler), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly).
We know that Princess Leia has the Death Star plans in her custody at the beginning of the original trilogy, and now we get to experience the story of how a brave band of rebel soldiers steals their way aboard the Empire’s flagship weapon.
Rogue One will be the first Star Wars Anthology film. These side stories will launch in-between the releases of the numbered movies. The next confirmed side story will focus on a young Han Solo as he finds his place in the galaxy. We don’t yet know who will play the famous nerf herder but the film is slated for a 2018 release.
Star Wars returned last December with the release of The Force Awakens. Now we just have to patiently wait for Rogue One and the currently untitled episode VIII to hit theaters. For more on Star Wars, read our review of the Force Awakens.
