Ryan Reynolds is at it again! The much-loved lead actor of the wildly popular Deadpool movie franchise is hitting the big screen again in Free Guy. However, while he plays the main character, Reynolds is not super in this action-comedy film. He is like everybody else…or so he believes.
Free Guy: Superhero Without the Suit
News of Free Guy first broke in 2018. The setting is in a Grand Theft Auto-like video game called Free City. Reynolds plays a man named Guy Free, who works as a bank teller. Throughout the course of the movie, he discovers that he is actually a background character in an open-world video game. Furthermore, Free finds out that the game he inhabits is to be discontinued soon. In response, Free works to master the virtual world in order to save its denizens from deletion.
The cast joining Reynolds in the film consists of Taika Waititi, Joe Keery, Jodie Comer, Channing Tatum, and more. Famous gamers including Ninja and Jacksepticeye will also appear in the film. During a preview of the movie at New York Comic-Con, Shawn Levy spoke of his discussions with Reynolds about the possibility of creating a superhero without a costume. “Ryan and I have talked about Free Guy as a superhero origin story without the cape and tights and the IP. If you were living in a video game and could master the system, your powers would be limitless.” Reynolds himself says that he has not been this excited to play a character since his first appearance as Deadpool.
Free Guy will release in theaters on July 3, 2020. This movie is a nice way to tide fans over until news about the future of the Deadpool franchise surfaces. Will you be seeing the film? Are you excited about real-life gaming champions in the movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
