She should have just moved on

Sabrina Carpenter kicked off the first night of Coachella 2026 in California, playing to a packed crowd with all her top hits. But in the middle of her set, one unexpected moment grabbed everyone’s attention. Someone in the audience let out an ululation, a loud, joyful, high-pitched trill that’s a big part of celebrations in Middle Eastern, North African, South Asian, and some African cultures. In Arabic, it’s called a zaghrouta, and people use it at weddings, parties, and big happy gatherings. However, the singer flat-out said she didn’t like it.

Carpenter clearly heard it and stopped the show, looking surprised. The incident went viral online, thanks to the festival livestream and some quick social media clips. She told the crowd she thought someone was “yodeling,” even asked the fan if that’s what they were doing, and said she didn’t like it, comparing the moment to something you would find at Burning Man.

The fan explained it was actually a cultural tradition, not yodeling. Still, Carpenter didn’t let it go. She questioned the fan, apparently asking if yodeling was really their culture. The singer can be heard saying, “This is weird.”

Coachella’s official YouTube stream, and a wave of fan videos flying around X, caught the moment that’s now lighting up the internet. People are falling into two camps. Folks loved Sabrina Carpenter’s overall set in Coachella 2026 in California, and celebrity drop-ins like Will Ferrell, Sam Elliott, and Susan Sarandon only fueled the excitement. Still, people are obsessing over this one moment more than anything else.

Internet Reacts To Sabrina Carpenter Calling a Fan’s Cultural Cheer ‘Weird’ at Coachella 2026, California

Reactions split quickly between those who felt she had genuinely stepped in it and those who thought the response online was overblown. Critics focused on the moment she kept going after the fan’s explanation. “I think she genuinely wasn’t coming from a bad place but when someone says ‘that’s my culture,’ put ur PR training to use and DONT DOUBLE DOWN,” one person wrote.

Others were more blunt. “She’s so odd for this, calling someone’s culture ‘weird,'” one user commented. Another zeroed in on the fact that she kept going rather than pivoting. “And she just kept going on???!!@#^#$ I thought she was Disney media trained,” a commenter added.

Some took a more charitable read on the whole exchange. “I don’t think Sabrina believed her when she said it’s her culture. Sabrina certainly thought she was joking and hence she jumped in too,” one person wrote, suggesting the miscommunication was genuine rather than dismissive.

Still, others kept it simple. “Why would she even say this like… just unnecessary and rude,” one user concluded.

The clip is gaining attention because it’s the flashpoint where pop culture’s big, glossy party meets something awkward and real. Carpenter clearly wasn’t expecting the interruption, and the look on her face said it all. She didn’t hide her discomfort, and her reaction was totally unfiltered. Now, whether this turns into the weekend’s lasting headline or fades behind the rave reviews for her performance, well, everyone online is still hashing that out.
