A beloved San Diego landmark — the Scripps Ranch rainbow fence — was recently painted white, sparking conversation and concern among local residents online. The 50-foot fence, once painted in rainbow Pride colors by homeowner Brittany Fuller as a symbol of love and unity, has now been covered in plain white paint. The sudden change has left locals confused and speculating about what happened.
In a recent Reddit thread on r/sandiego titled “When did they remove the Pride fence?”, a California local explained why the sudden change was such a shock:
Anyone who lives in Scripps Ranch would most likely know the pride fence on Scripps Trail, it has been an iconic spot that the middle schoolers would sometimes see on the bus route. I used to pass it every day when I would drop my brother off at school but now that I’m in college I havent been there since June but when I was driving to a nearby bakery I had to pull over in shock at the blank worn down fence. Does anyone know if the city did something? Or if there might have been new owners of the home where the fence lies?
Many locals shared their thoughts and theories in the Reddit thread, with one prevailing explanation emerging: the Fuller family, who originally lived there, have moved and the new homeowners decided to paint over the well-known rainbow colors. One San Diego local explained, “according to an SR facebook group, the family that lived there were/are selling their house.” while another agreed adding, “This. They were apparently renting from someone who decided to sell the house, so they painted over it.”
Interestingly, even locals within the area have been left surprised by the sudden change, with one person penning, “This had to be recent, I live in the area and this is news to me. I hope it’s simply because the property is for sale, and not the result of bad rhetoric among the neighbors.” Others, meanwhile, were left a little crestfallen by the Scripps Ranch rainbow fence’s new makeover, with one person declaring, “Damn I used to walk by all the time when I lived in Scripps ranch“.
It’s worth noting that the Scripps Ranch rainbow fence has faced plenty of challenges before. Not long after homeowner Brittany Fuller first painted it in bright Pride colors, the fence was vandalized multiple times, with sections defaced or painted over by unknown individuals. Despite the damage, Fuller and supportive neighbors repeatedly repainted the fence, turning it into a lasting symbol of resilience and community pride in San Diego.
For many in Scripps Ranch, seeing the once-colorful Pride fence now painted white feels like the end of a small yet meaningful era. What was once a bright symbol of love, acceptance, and community spirit has quietly disappeared, leaving only memories and a reminder of how much a simple fence came to mean to so many San Diegans.
