So it turns out that NBC is trying to get Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role of Kathryn Merteuil in the TV-based follow up to the classic movie, Cruel Intentions. The 1999 classic was a modern adaption of 18th-century French novel ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ and starred Gellar as a rich and highly manipulative schoolgirl in what was quite possibly her most iconic role after Buffy.
According to Deadline, the basic plot of the Cruel Intentions TV adaption is;
“It follows the beautiful and cunning Kathryn Merteuil — the character played in the film by Gellar — as she vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her step-brother, the late Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe), and Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon).”
Set fifteen years after the events of the movie, NBC has just greenlit the shooting of a pilot episode and Gellar’s presence would really help to bolster the pilot’s credibility; in the eyes of both the fans and the studio. This is obviously important if they want to have a full season of Cruel Intentions ordered.
Deadline reports that Gellar has not yet agreed to return and is currently reading the script.
