Jed MacKay’s current run of Moon Knight is bringing the Scarlet Scarab into the fray for the milestone 25th issue. This issue is oversized, featuring art from Alessandro Cappuccio, Alessandro Vitti, and Partha Pratim. It features the comic debut of Moon Knight’s former lover Layla El-Faouly, who will pick up the mantle of Scarlet Scarab in a special limited series.
A Milestone Issue
In Moon Knight #25, the past is becoming a problem for the titular hero as he hunts down his latest enemy. As Marc Spector hunts for answers across the globe, he is led to the graves of Hart Island. Here, he is haunted by the final mission of the mercenary crew known as the Karnak Cowboys. This crew consisted of members like Jean-Paul Duchamp, Robert Plesko, and Layla El-Faouly.
Plus, the issue features a classic story from writer Doug Moench and the Emmy-nominated artist Bill Sienkiewicz. When the issue wraps up, Moon Knight will embark on his next great adventure in Moon Knight: City of the Dead. Closely followed by a guest appearance in Agatha Harkness’ Contest of Chaos.
The Scarlet Scarab
Moon Knight: City of the Dead comes from writer David Pepose and artist Marcelo Ferreira. The limited series features the comic debut of Layla El-Faouly as the Scarlet Scarab, which was seen in the Disney series. Together, Spector and El-Faouly will journey beyond the land of the living and into the City of the Dead.
The Scarlet Scarab is no stranger to the Moon Knight universe. However, this is the first time Layla El-Faouly picks up the mantle. Within the comics, the Scarlet Scarab was the alter ego of Egyptian nationalist Abdul Faoul. He used an ancient Egyptian artifact to become the protector of Egypt from foreign invaders. The artifact was eventually passed to his son, Mehemet.
As the Scarlet Scarab, Faoul gained superhuman strength and the ability to shoot mystical energies from his body. He also produces a barrier of invincibility around himself and can fly. While this is Layla’s debut in the comics, she will likely possess the same powers. Though, we will have to wait until mid-July for both Moon Knight #25 and Moon Knight: City of the Dead to find out.
