2024 continues to give shows the axe. Apple TV has canceled Schmigadoon! Eight months after its season 2 finale. A disappointing result after fans, cast, and crew of the series awaited news of a potential third season of the musical comedy. The series starred Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong.

The news comes from co-creator Cinco Paul, who posted the announcement on Instagram (seen below). In this, the writer revealed that season 3 was “written (including 25 new songs) but we unfortunately wonโ€™t be making it. Such is life.” He also wrote that “the optimist in me is convinced itโ€™s not the end of Schmigadoonโ€ฆ and maybe itโ€™s even a happy beginning.” No discussions were revealed if it is being auctioned to another studio to house a third season.

Co-created by Paul and Ken Daurio, the series followed Key and Strong as a couple discovering a magical town after a backpacking trip. Now that it was canceled, we will not see what other direction the creators would have taken Schmigadoon!. The second season followed the couple as their love grew, speed bumps were hit in their relationship, and what happened when they found another musical world that covered the ’60s-80s. They were joined by returning stars Ariana DeBose, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, and Aaron Tveit.

During its run, the series had modest success at award shows. Its first season was nominated for a Grammy. Across both seasons, it was nominated for seven Emmys and won one for its original music in the first season.

Although it was canceled, you can check out all 12 episodes of Schmigadoon! on Apple TV Plus.
