The last time we saw True Detective on HBO was two years ago, a good amount of time for a show to be off the air. But after all that time, it appears that the show is making progress towards a season 3. There’ve been reports saying that Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the first two seasons, has written at least the first two episodes of the next season. Also, that David Milch, creator of Deadwood and co-creator of NYPD Blue, is planning on helping Pizzolatto with the next season. Although these are the reports as of now, the third season of True Detective has yet to be confirmed. There’s also no set showrunner for the next season as of now (if it were to get the green light).
The mere possibility of a third season is good news, especially after the beating the critics gave the second season. It isn’t old news that season 2 fell short of expectations after what was seen in the first season. I believe fans didn’t like the second season as much because it didn’t meet the standards of what they saw in 2014 with the first season. I personally still enjoyed the second season, but I can agree that it didn’t compare to the first. The first, in my opinion, was almost perfect. It’s hard to create something of similar quality twice in a row. This being the case, I’m sure the time off has done Pizzolatto good. It’s possible that he felt rushed writing the second season, so, as a result, the finished product didn’t come out as great as the first season (in which he had a lot of time to prepare). But with almost two years gone by, I’m sure he’s come up with some material worthy of the True Detective name. Let’s just hope that he gets the green light to begin production.
As there’s no individual set to be the showrunner, the third season could very well be done by someone else other than Pizzolatto. If this were the case, reports say that he would most likely still oversee the production. HBO wants a third season and believes it’s an important franchise, but they aren’t jumping the gun on this one. It appears that they’re waiting for the right time to give a third season of the show the green light, as Pizzolatto is working on some other projects at the moment.
Matthew McConahauey stated back in December that he’d be willing to reprise his role of Rust Cohle, a main character in the first season. This would be interesting to see. Mostly because True Detective is an anthology series, so including a character from a previous story line could either be a bad or great thing. Him coming back to the series ultimately depends on what sort of direction the writers decide on going in with the third season. Unfortunately, Detective Rust Cohle may have solved his last case back in season 1. Fingers crossed that he’s up for one more. His official announcement of him stating he’d be interested in reprising his role can be viewed below.

No matter what happens, though, any news regarding a possible third season of True Detective is good news as of now. Well, news saying that there isn’t going to be a third season would be pretty terrible. Luckily, this news isn’t that kind of news. Check back to see what happens moving forward.
