Selena Gomez sparked an Instagram storm last summer as she honored close friend and kidney donor Francia Raisa. The 31-year-old singer made 2017 headlines for undergoing a life-saving kidney transplant for her Lupus condition, although images thanking Francia last year caused chaos in the comments section.
Posting to mark Francia’s birthday, Selena shared a gallery of images featuring the duo. While fans left the ex to Justin Bieber over 9 million likes, controversy in the comments saw some users suggesting that Francia had been “forced” to donate her kidney.
Selena Gomez Honors Kidney Donor On Instagram
Opening her share with a summery outdoor shot as she enjoyed a beverage with Francia, Selena reminded her 429 million followers of the close bond she has with the friend who saved her life.
In a swipe right, fans saw the pop star posing close to Francia while backed by a white wall, with the final image seeing the two all dolled up in evening dresses. In a caption, Selena told fans: “Happiest of birthdays to this special human being. No matter where life takes us, I love you. ❤️ @franciaraisa.”
Chaos In The Comments Section
The beef in the comments likely stemmed from Francia having stated that despite having a close bond, she and Selena haven’t always seen eye to eye.
Gaining over 11,000 likes, one fan wrote: “Dude, i really feel for Selena, because Francia took advantage of the situation and started to act entitled. Listen guys, I Know that Selena should have behaved differently regarding alcohol, and so forth.” They added: “However, nobody deserves to feel guilty for receiving an organ. Do yall think that donors go and ask the recipient to comply to rules or expectations of the donor?”
Alleging that the post had fueled more anger from Francia, another said: “Damn Selena! Did you pay Francia so you can post this? she literally unfollowed you and deleted her instagram after this post. “
With time, however, comments saying that the hateful comments should stop became the most-liked. “Those who are trolling and bullying Francia should be ashamed of themselves!” one fan wrote. Agreeing, a further user said: “‘Y’all need to leave these two alone. Whatever that happens, it’s between them. At the end of the day, they still love and support each other and it’s their personal lives.”
The original 2017 photo showing Selena and Francia in hospital beds and following Selena’s successful transplant is still live on her Instagram. The post currently sits at over 10 million likes.
Selena and Francia go way back. The two met on the set of Secret Life of the American Teenager and Wizards of Waverly Place.
