Not taking the bait

A clip circulating on X shows Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” declining to join fellow Republican Sen. Thom Tillis in calling for President Trump to replace Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Host Kristen Welker pressed Kennedy on whether he still had confidence in Hegseth. Kennedy said he voted for him and would “probably vote for him again.”  Online users reacted after the exchange, with many praising Kennedy for standing by Hegseth and others saying he sidestepped oversight.

The video shows Welker asking Kennedy, near the end of the interview, about fellow Republican Sen. Thom Tillis calling for Pete Hegseth to be replaced. “Do you still have confidence in Secretary Hegseth?” she asks. Kennedy pauses, then says, “It’s not my place to have confidence in him.” When Welker replies, “You’re a senator,” he says, “Let me finish,” and argues Hegseth “seems to be firing a lot of good people.”

Kennedy then says, “I voted for him. I’d probably vote for him again until evidence is shown to me that he shouldn’t have fired these guys.” He adds, “I’m not worried about personalities,” and says the country needs “more bullets, not just for Iran but for the world,” plus more money for the military. The clip does not show Tillis, Hegseth, or what was discussed earlier in the interview. The poster wrote that Kennedy “REFUSES to throw” Hegseth “under the bus,” which is the poster’s characterization of the exchange.

How Viewers Are Responding to the Meet the Press Exchange

Some users praised Kennedy for standing by Hegseth and treating the question as a trap. One wrote that Kennedy “really wasn’t taking the bait.” Another said, “Don’t mess with Sen Kennedy.”

A third added they were “glad he didn’t give her what she wanted.”

Others focused on Hegseth’s record rather than the interview itself. One commenter said, “Pete is doing a terrific job.”

Another called him “a soldier’s soldier, not a swamp creature,” and a third wrote, “Best damn SECRETARY of WAR THAT AMERICA COULD ASK FOR.”

A separate group aimed its criticism at Tillis. One viewer said he “is just another Trump hater forced into retirement.” Another argued Tillis “is no one’s colleague.”

A smaller set of commenters rejected the supportive reading. One replied,  “Jesus Christ, you sycophants twist everything.” Another called Kennedy “a RINO snake.”

For now, the exchange has become part of a wider argument over Hegseth’s standing at the Pentagon. Viewers remain divided over whether Kennedy’s remarks show Republican support holding firm or a refusal to answer a direct question about the secretary’s job.
