A woman in New Jersey, after returning home, suddenly noticed a foul smell and thought there was a gas leak. After further investigating the source, it turns out that her neighbor had passed away weeks ago.
The nightmare-like story was shared by TikTok user marybabybaby0 (Mary). Initially, she started by giving some context to her audience, saying that her attached neighbor had a history of foul smells coming out of his apartment. According to her, he was a hoarder, had no family, friends, or significant other, and she never saw the man except for a few times.
The unsanitary issues with the man, which included having no running water, eventually subsided once Mary involved the police. Everything ever since appeared to be normal. However, at nine weeks pregnant, Mary suddenly noticed a foul smell yet again, but she couldn’t pinpoint its source.
“Kinda smells like something’s dead,” Mary said at the time, not knowing she was predicting the harrowing reveal to come.
Thinking some dead flowers were the source of the smell, she threw them away. The smell, however, stayed, and Mary started to worry. It came, mostly, from under her sink, so the New Jersey woman believed there could be a dead animal in the pipes or even a gas leak.
Dead Neighbor Found, Reactions
Despite her theories, once the gas company came, they confirmed that the smell was not coming from a gas leak. One worker who went to the house to inspect it said, “That’s not gas. Something is dead.”
After Mary’s husband got home, he checked the gas vent for any dead animals. When he checked on their neighbor, however, he saw that “flies were circling around.” Mary immediately called the police for a welfare check.
The cops were unable to make contact with Mary’s neighbor, so they contacted the man’s sister. Eventually, the officers came knocking on her door and revealed the truth. Her neighbor was dead, and he had been dead for weeks. This, unfortunately, explained the foul smell.
Mary’s story quickly went viral, garnering more than 1.5 million views and hundreds of comments. Just like her, users were horrified by the deadly outcome.
“That’s why I never want to be attached to another home or dwelling,” one user commented. Another one said, “Someone said it’s a smell you can never forget. I hope to never smell it.” A third one added, “That’s actually really sad for all of you.”
