The short answer is yes, helping Barnes is a good option if you want some Galleons, and to help a friendly man in need. But let’s break down the whole saga so you’re on the same page.

Midway through your Hogwarts Legacy adventure, you’ll bump into a man named Ackley Barnes. He’s located in Hogsmeade. Ackley will ask you to help him take revenge on his ex-partner, which involves stealing the Venomous Tentacula.

This request might sound rather suspicious to those familiar with the franchise and its implications in the books but don’t worry too much. There’s no karma in Hogwarts Legacy so you can freely use unforgivable curses; not to mention, there’s our buddy Ackley is a businessman who offers plenty of cash in exchange for this favor.

After accepting the quest, follow the marker to get to Alfred Lawley’s basement. Then, you will need to get to the room with the Venomous Tentacula. Of course, you shouldn’t be seen, so use the Invisibility Potion or Disillusionment Charm.

Once you’ve got the Venomous Tentacula, you’ll also need to sneak out. It is a pretty simple side quest that you shouldn’t have too many problems with. However, after stealing the Venomous Tentacula, you will then be faced with making a choice. Your answer determines what your reward will be. There are several dialogue options:

  • Happy to get rid of it – Ackley Barnes did not reveal the size of the reward, so he will only give you a piece of equipment and 300 Galleons.
  • I’d like to be paid – Ackley Barnes will honestly reward you for dangerous work and give you a piece of equipment and 500 Galleons.
