Simone Biles and her husband Johnathan Owens are at the peak of a controversy since the latter seemingly downtalked his wife during a recent interview. The scandal stems from a sitdown with hosts Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder on The Pivot podcast. Speaking to the former NFL stars, Johnathan claimed he never knew Simone before their pairing on a dating site. Their relationship eventually worked out, but the Green Bay Packers safety believes it only did because Simone did all the chasing. The star ultimately called himself the “catch in their relationship, aggravating fans.
The Catch Controversy
Explaining the onset of their relationship, Simone Biles’s husband admitted he swiped her initially but reconsidered after returning from his workout session and discovered she liked some of his Instagram posts. That eventually piqued his interest. He explained,
“‘Man, this gotta be fake.’ I didn’t know who she was at the time. But like, the first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of followers. So in my mind I’m like, ‘OK, she’s got to be good.’”
They began texting soon after and decided to meet up in person. Johnathan clarified that he initially fought their budding romance because of his fear of commitment and being at the early stages of his career. Simone on the other hand did all the work to make the relationship happen. She drove 45 minutes to meet up with him. But once they met, Simone Biles and Johnathan Owen hit things off instantly, becoming husband and wife soon enough.
Despite their years together as a couple, Johnathan still believes himself the catch, seeing as she did most of the chasing. During the interview, Ryan Clark jokingly suggested Johnathan must have been the catch early in their romance. The athlete took those words at face value, responding,
“I always so we the man, the catch man. I always say we really the catch.”
Johnathan Owens and Simone Biles “Unbothered” Amid Controversy
Johnathan Owens’ suggestion that the question should be about how Simone Biles managed to pull someone like him, rather than how he managed to score her has since stirred controversy. Enraged fans took to various platforms to slam the athlete for his humiliating comment about his wife. Many have also called for Simone Biles to divorce her husband, knowing she deserved better.
Most of the commenters resorted to comparing their relationship with that of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, urging Johnathan to emulate the latter. Despite the backlash, the couple is determined to hold on to each other regardless of the naysayers’ opinion. They have since responded in their own rights, with snappy social media posts.
On his part, Johnathan Owen shared wedding photos of them together. Additionally, he shared other snaps from some of their most memorable couple moments, captioning it,
“Unbothered 😂❤️ Just know we locked in over here 🤞🏽.”
Simone also shared a wedding photo on her Instagram page. The pic showed the then-newlyweds making funny faces at the camera, holding a finger up against their mouth. She captioned it with the single word, “mood,” suggesting she couldn’t care less what the world thought of their union.
