The USA women’s gymnastics team led the Olympics team finals on Tuesday, winning the prized gold medal with Simone Biles at the forefront. Team USA impressed on Sunday with outstanding performance at the qualifying rounds, moving on to the team finals. Despite sustaining a calf injury during the team qualifiers, Simone proved herself the greatest of all time, leading the scoreboard in major events and even landing her signature Yurchenko double pike vault in one clean swoop.
She returned to the arena on Tuesday for the team finals, competing in all four gymnastic events, including vaults, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Led by Simone Biles, the USA Women’s gymnastics team bagged gold, leading the 27-year-old to reclaim her crown as the most decorated US gymnast of all time.
Simone Biles Gloats Over USA Women’s Gymnastics Victory
After a hearty celebration around the arena, sporting a USA flag alongside her teammates, Simone took the festivities to social media, flooding her pages with celebratory posts. On X, the athlete shared her new nickname for the USA Women’s gymnastics team and the reason behind it while giving a nod to coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi. She wrote,
“Okay on the real though, the official team name is ‘Golden Girls’ (because oldest Olympics team).”
The name was well-received by most fans, who admitted Simone and the USA Women’s gymnastics team indeed deserved it. Praising the gymnast and her team’s effort, one X user wrote,
“The ‘Golden Girls’ is a perfect name! It beautifully captures both the team’s seasoned excellence & glittering achievements. The journey of this team continues to inspire & shine bright.”
Another approved of the nickname, saying,
“What a wonderful name for a fantastic team. Power, grace, precision, dedication, y’all are amazing! As a fan, I just want to say Thank you #GoldenGirls.”
One X user had reservations about Simone Biles’ christening of the USA Women’s Gymnastics team after the Olympics gold win, calling it a lack of patriotism. Condemning the move, he wrote,
“What a stunning lack of patriotism, Siren. The name of the team is AMERICA, the oldest and greatest country on earth.”
Expectedly, fans found the bashful comment offensive, hitting back at the netizen in Simone’s defense. Fans pointed out that the gymnast’s decision to nickname The Golden Girls took precedence from various USA Olympics teams before her. One fired,
“USA Gymnastics women’s team always had nicknames. the Magnificent Seven from 1996, The Fab/Fierce Five from 2012, and The Final Five from 2019. Do some research.”
Regardless of what name they go by though, the USA Women’s Gymnastics team of 2024 has proven themselves incomparable in the world of sports, earning their spots at the all-round final come Thursday. The Golden Girls certainly has a nice ring to it.
