An Ohio couple was recently told they were no longer welcome back at a restaurant after they left without leaving a tip for their server. The pair had gone to enjoy a casual meal, and after they paid, a man claiming to be the restaurant owner reportedly followed them across the street and told them never to return.
The incident has since gone viral. On TikTok, where it was originally posted by the girlfriend, the video of the couple’s confrontation with the owner drew mixed reactions from netizens. People are divided over whether the customers were wrong not to tip and whether the restaurant’s response went too far.
According to the girlfriend, the incident happened at Ari & Mia’s Small Town Cafe in Miamitown, Ohio. She and her boyfriend had been in the area because he had something to do nearby when she became hungry and decided they should get food at the restaurant.
The woman claimed they received very little attention from their server beyond being given water and their food, but she still intended to leave a tip on the table. However, it slipped her mind when her boyfriend’s card reportedly kept locking while he was trying to pay. She said she went to their vehicle to get money, and after they finally sorted out the payment, she did not remember to leave the tip.
Couple Gets Confronted by Restaurant Owner
While the couple was at a nearby store after leaving the restaurant, a man wearing an Ari & Mia’s shirt started calling out to them. He told the couple, “If you don’t have money to tip the servers, don’t come back.”
The boyfriend shot back that it was their choice whether or not they should tip, and the man responded, “You’re 100% correct, you do not. But you’re just not welcome back here.”
The man claimed he was the owner of the restaurant, and after seeing that the boyfriend was recording, he challenged the couple to post the video, adding that his restaurant would be doing the same.
The couple protested that they had paid for their food and even questioned whether their race had anything to do with the way they were being treated. But the man walked off after delivering his verdict.
Netizens React to the Ohio Restaurant Tipping Ban
The encounter caused quite a stir online, but people were far from united over who was in the wrong. In the comments under the TikTok post, some people felt it was inappropriate to hold patrons responsible for supplementing servers’ wages through tips.
One commenter asked, “Since when is tipping mandatory?” Someone else wrote, “Pay your servers a living wage. Tip culture is so weird.” Another found it fascinating that people were “angry because customers didn’t tip,” while seemingly being “perfectly okay with the owner not paying employees a living wage.” A fourth added, “The amount of entitled people saying you need to tip is crazy lol.”
Others were far less sympathetic to the couple and people who do not tip in general. “Don’t make this a race thing. You should always TIP YOUR SERVERS,” one person argued. Another called leaving without tipping “very tacky,” adding, “I’d be so embarrassed leaving no tip for someone who literally waited on my hand and foot.”
“He stood on business and I’m here for it. #TipYourServer,” someone else remarked. “I stand with the manager. If you don’t want to tip eat fast food and serve yourself,” another viewer declared.
Some viewers landed somewhere in the middle, believing the couple should have tipped while also finding the restaurant’s reaction inappropriate. “I think people should tip, but this guys behavior is unacceptable. Tipping is not mandatory,” one comment read. “Both wrong but that business is more in the wrong for excluding non tippers,” another concluded.
As of this writing, the video has gained more than 600,000 views on TikTok. The restaurant has not publicly responded or provided more context on its side.
