Ryan Reynolds, Michael Bay, and the writers from Deadpool 2–Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick–are apparently making their own little X-Force. Sources have stated that these unlikely band of heroes will be joining forces to bring an original film to Netflix. While no exact details about the movie have been released, there’s at least a title: Six Underground. Oh, and the fact that Ryan Reynolds will star in it, Michael Bay will direct it, and that it’s based on an idea from Reese and Wernick.
A press release from Skydance Media stated that it’ll be an action film “based on an original idea from writers and executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.” This language feels a bit confusing when taking into account what it actually means. The movie will be based on their idea, but will it be written by them? That is the question. It could be that Skydance Media was given the rights to their idea, but without them doing the actual developing of it. Again, there aren’t enough details about the film yet to make that sort of assessment.
Michael Bay is best known for his work as the director for the Transformers franchise, The Rock, and the Bad Boys franchise. He’s considered one of the most commercially successful filmmakers in Hollywood. Most of his films are heavy on the special effects with little regard for deeper meaning/plot/character development. So it’ll be interesting to see how this “X-Force” comes together to make this Netflix film.
As for Reese, Wernick, and Reynolds… They’ve been pretty busy after the release of Deadpool 2. Although not as critically acclaimed as the first Deadpool, which was released back in 2016, the second installment managed to dethrone Avengers: Infinity War from its place at the top of the box office. With that one in the books, the trio looks to the future with Six Underground and Michael Bay.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce the film alongside Michael Bay. Skydance has a healthy relationship with Netflix. They brought the Emmy-nominated series, Grace and Frankie, to the streaming service as well as the sci-fi series, Altered Carbon.
