Sarah Jessica Parker and Andy Cohen are speaking out after the Pride flag was removed from the Stonewall Inn in New York. In an Instagram video, the longtime friends responded to President Trump’s order banning non-agency flags at National Parks, calling for the rainbow banner to be restored and standing firm on the history and community it represents.
Celebrities React to Stonewall Flag Decision
‘Question, you think if you remove our flag we’re going to not care, or remember, or continue to advocate, or forget, I’m just curious,’ SJP asked in the video. She continued:
‘Yeah, we want our flag back. But, just cause you take it away doesn’t mean you take away the history, or the community, or everybody that stands shoulder to shoulder.’
The clip showed Christopher Park, home to the Stonewall National Monument, with three Pride flags in view. Parker captioned it, ‘X, SJ, and Andy.’ Cohen also shared an Instagram story a few hours prior, calling the flag removal ‘needless, mean [expletive].’
The Stonewall Inn, the site of the 1969 riots that fueled the modern LGBT movement, was designated a national monument in 2016. According to Daily Mail, protesters gathered outside the monument on Tuesday, holding signs that read, ‘You can’t erase our history.‘ Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal promised that the flag would be reinstated soon.
Voices Rise Against Flag Removal
Social media users joined Parker and Cohen in condemning the decision. One wrote, “Another petty act by a small and hateful man, and all the small and hateful men behind him. They cannot erase our history, and they cannot erase us.” Others added, “Someone has to put it back,” and “Proving we need another Stonewall Protest.”
Fans also highlighted the broader struggle for LGBTQ+ rights in the past until present. One commented, “LGBT rights didn’t go through the 50s to the 90s to be erased and shoved back in the closet.” Another noted the political distraction, saying, “Everything he does is a distraction from the Epstein files. Any headline that isn’t about that is a win for him and gay hating red meat for his dumb followers.” On Instagram, fans thanked the celebrities for speaking up on the issue.
Parker has long advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and has expressed gratitude for the community’s support throughout her career. ‘That there was a natural affinity and affection made sense to me, and we were really grateful,’ she shared, emphasizing the enduring connection between the LGBTQ+ community and the stories she’s helped tell on screen as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City and Just Like That.
