Celebrities receive all kinds of criticism and scrutiny even in public, but one interaction involving former Disney singer Coco Jones went viral for how she handled not just a heckler, but a racist one. An unidentified woman reportedly hurled racist insults at the singer while she was participating in a photoshoot on the streets of New York City.
The incident occurred on October 20 on a New York sidewalk. Jones was doing a photo shoot for a Tommy Hilfiger event near The Plaza when, all of a sudden, a random woman interrupted the session and started shouting “Ew!” at the singer. Initially, Jones responded with “Thank you!” appearing unbothered and still smiling, which seems to have led to the heckler escalating her insults.
The heckler added, “So disgusting!… You look so freaking Black! Blackie!” before Jones walked away, appearing calm and collected despite the racist insults she experienced. Jones eventually continued to The Plaza and remained seemingly unfazed by the incident.
Coco Jones Wins Praise for Her Reaction
Regardless of Jones’ handling of the heckler, the incident has sparked outrage across social media. Many have been applauding the singer for keeping her cool, while others have questioned why nobody appeared to intervene. Jones’ response, or lack thereof, quickly became a talking point among fans who argued that refusing to engage with someone seeking attention can be more effective than getting into an argument.
“Staying in work mode while someone’s trying to provoke you is elite self control,” according to an X user. Another user praised Jones for handling the situation with class, adding, “The best response to ignorance is refusing to give it the attention it came for.” Others expressed frustration that someone could feel comfortable shouting racist abuse at a person simply going about her business.
“Genuinely what makes you see someone minding their business and decide to shout racist insults to them?? Like you have to be a miserable person to even think of that,” said the commenter. Another user summed up the frustration with a short response: “Being Black in America is exhausting.”
Several commenters also questioned why the racist woman had not been identified, while others wondered whether anyone involved in the photoshoot had stepped in to defend Jones. Some critics have questioned why the cameras had not been pointed toward the heckler, asking whether the encounter was staged or part of a promotional stunt. Others pushed back, suggesting that confrontations with strangers on New York’s streets are not necessarily unusual.
Jones, who has built a career spanning music and acting, has not been reported to have publicly addressed the incident. Still, the celebrity incident has renewed calls for people witnessing such abuse to speak up and support those being targeted.
