Back in 2023, Prince William launched Homewards, a homelessness-prevention campaign aimed at helping people without homes. While it sounded great on paper, people now question whether he supports its aims, given his plans to allegedly evict people living in the Bradninch Estate, a historic property where farmers have lived for generations. The Observer alleges that some tenants are being told to move out in six months if they don’t purchase their property.
Reportedly, many of these farmers can’t afford to buy their property, not to mention the burden of moving out of a home their families have lived in for generations. The Duchy of Cornwall, aka the organization owned by Prince William, claims it’s offering these farmers guidance and welfare support, urging them that the sale of their property will help the betterment of communities and the environment. On October 28, the Tenant Farmers Association issued a statement on the matter.
The post points out a handful of issues, including the lack of affordability for farmers to buy their farms, a lack of timely communication with the Duchy, and the trauma and stress this ordeal has put on families, among other things. “The Duchy has assured the TFA that nobody will be made homeless through these changes,” the statement reads. “The TFA welcomes that commitment, but it does not answer every concern.” That said, online users aren’t convinced that William is doing these farmers good.
Reddit Doubts Prince William’s Promises for the Farmers
“Hopefully the media will leave Meghan alone and take a hard look at who William will be selling the land that has been these farmers’ homes and livelihoods,” remarked one Redditor. “No surprise, anyone who looks past the PR can see William doesn’t care about others,” sighed another. “So he wants to help the homeless..by making more people homeless?” questioned a third.
A fourth user pointed out how six months isn’t nearly enough time to prepare for one’s life being uprooted and kicked from their home, not to mention the decision of having to pay for unaffordable property. “They should be given 2 to 3 years,” the commenter argued. Still, no one has been allegedly evicted or made homeless from Prince William’s reported sale of the Bradninch Estate, but many people are definitely scared this won’t end well.
