Sofia Vergara traded her comedy image for a more dramatic role in Griselda. The Netflix miniseries, which premiered in January 2024, focuses on the life of famous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. Vergara, who starred in and produced the series, earned rave reviews for her performance. At this year’s Emmys, she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Although she was a favorite to win, she lost to Jodie Foster.
This isn’t the first time, the actress has been snubbed over an Emmy. She was nominated four times for her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family and came up empty each time. Vergara seemed a lock to finally take home the gold this year, but it wasn’t meant to be.
While the actress is trying to handle it in her stride, according to Life & Style, it’s “dragging down her self-esteem.” A top TV insider tells the outlet they were as shocked by the snub as the actress was.
I voted for Sofia and almost everybody I know in the TV business who saw Griselda did as well. The show was simply outstanding.
And when you compare the viewership numbers and even critics’ reveiws, Griselda pretty much blew True Detective: Night Country out of the water. Sofia has a right to feel screwed over, especially after enduring so many snubs during her Modern Family heyday.
Did Jealousy Play a Part in Sofia Vergara’s Emmy Loss?
As with all awards shows, the 2024 Emmy was filled with lots of surprises. Foster winning over Vergara was a shock to many people.
“Nobody understands why she lost this time around, and nobody thinks they were seeing Jodie’s career-best work in True Detective,” the source explained. “It was solid and it was Emmy-worthy, but Griselda was an all-timer, and Sofia and her team, and of course Netflix, did everything to pave the way for a win.”
The insider then hinted that the loss could be because some Academy voters are jealous of Vergara.
Even though Sofia will never say this publicly, it all boils down to jealousy. Especially over the last fifteen years Sofia has gotten incredibly rich, she still looks like she’s 35, and she can pretty much get anything made that she wants right now thanks to her extreme level of business savvy.
That kind of elevated status brings out the haters and it effectively makes Jodie look like a scrappy underdog, even though she has had a longer and bigger career than Sofia.
Even though she came up empty again this year, the actress isn’t giving up in her Emmy pursuit.
“The silver lining here is that Netflix is absolutely going to figure out another shot at the gold for her, and she has all the motivation she needs to turn in another exceptional performance.”
Sofia Vergara has proven she can play comedy and dramatic roles. Whatever project is next for the star, it’s bound to gain attention and possibly generate award buzz.
