Somber is a mystery game that is a bit of a mystery. Recently announced by its developers, Lost Cause Games (who are located in Argentina themselves), there is little known about this title beyond its official announcement page, which can be found here.
What tidbits are available to seem tantalizing. Described by the developers as a “4 player coop, third person suspense game” it sounds like it has deep roots in paranormal and horror detective fiction. Set in the fictitious city of Dale, Argentina when the country at large is in turmoil after the end of WWII both you and the other players take on the roles of brave citizens of the town as you attempt to defend it from an invasive cult, the cult of Somber, who are attempting to summon an ancient God.
When the devs say that you will be defending the town they really mean it, as you will not just be attempting to keep the cult at bay but in the case of your failure the various NPC townsfolk that you inspired to stay around to help you will begin to flee and your town will descend into chaos and darkness, literally. In addition to this there will be both madness and phobia systems in place, meaning that when you stumble across the truly awful and otherworldly in your investigative crusade against the cult of Somber that you will pay for it.
The game sounds like it is shaping up to be fairly Lovecraftian in nature. We can only hope that this is the case.
You can follow the games continuing development on both Twitter and Facebook.
