Red quill or blue quill? Which will you decide? This is the question asked by a new Matrix-themed TV spot for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The new spot pays homage to The Matrix series, which just released the fourth entry in the series, The Matrix Resurrections.
The “red quill” and “blue quill” are a not-so-subtle reference to the red pill and blue pill that Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) offers Neo (Keanu Reeves) in the first film. The Sonic tv spot also begins with The Matrix loading screen, however, the lines of numbers are now Sonic’s trademark gold coins. We then see an outline of Sonic (Ben Schwartz) in the iconic green Matrix lines before he fully appears. The spot ends with the red quill and blue quill next to each other in a white background, similar to the teaser poster for The Matrix Resurrections.
The first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ended with a reveal of Knuckles, the red echidna who will be voiced by Idris Elba. While Knuckles and Sonic are normally friends in the video games, Knuckles appears to be working for Dr. Eggman (Jim Carrey), who is returning for revenge against Sonic after the first movie and is now rocking the iconic large, bushy mustache. While Sonic has the power of super speed, Knuckles has the power of super-strength so it will be interesting to see how the two battle it out in this sequel. It’s likely the two will end up becoming friends by the end, but the idea of the two fighting is exciting.
Also arriving for this sequel is Tails, who will be voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who voices Tails in the video games. James Marsden will also be returning for the sequel as well. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to premiere in theaters on April 8, 2022. The Matrix Resurrections is now currently streaming on HBO Max and in theaters.
