Sony has acquired the independent studio Insomniac Games, best known for last years PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man. Insomniac has also worked on Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive, the Ratchet & Clank series, as well as Resistance for PlayStation. Prior to this acquisition, Founder and CEO of Insomniac spoke of the desire to keep the company independent. Here is what the two parties had to say:

Insomniac Games is one of the most highly-acclaimed development studios in the industry and their legacy of best-in class storytelling and gameplay is unparalleled, we have enjoyed a strong collaborative partnership with the studio for many years, and are thrilled to officially welcome them to the Worldwide Studios family. The addition of Insomniac Games to SIE WWS reiterates our commitment to developing world class gaming experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.

Sean Layden, Chairman, Sony Worldwide Studios:

Joining the WWS family gives Insomniac even greater opportunities to achieve our studio vision of making positive and lasting impressions on people’s lives, we’ve enjoyed a special relationship with PlayStation practically since our inception. Our partnership amplifies our potential, and Marvel’s Spider-Man was a testament to this. We’re excited to take the next step in our growth alongside our longtime WWS partners. Most of all, we look forward to delivering fresh, new experiences for our fans.

Ted Price, founder, CEO, Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games

Insomniac’s last release Marvel’s Spider-Man is the best selling PS4 exclusive game to date. As of July 28, 2019, the title had sold 13.2 million copies worldwide. So it is fair to say that Sony has likely signed the Burbank squad to a sequel.

This news will come as a huge disappointment to Xbox fans. Sunset Overdrive was a much-loved Xbox One exclusive, and many hoped for a sequel developed by Insomniac.

What do you think Insomniac will make next? Let us know in the comments below.
