Sony Says the “Door is Closed” on Spider-Man in the MCU (For Now)

It seems that the Disney/Sony divorce is getting worse and worse with each reported update. Sony’s previous statements on the failed negotiations were disheartening, but some fans still held hope that these two companies could find some common ground soon and strike a deal. According to Sony Pictures chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra, we shouldn’t expect to see Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time.

While talking with Variety, Vinciquerra said that “for the moment the door is closed,” regarding Spider-Man in the MCU. The Sony Pictures CEO would later go on to say that “it’s a long life,”. This is just to hint that although Sony is working on their own Spider-Verse away from Disney and the MCU, they could always come to a new agreement down the line.

Sony essentially took their prized toy away from Disney’s hands and went home. Whether or not Sony is actually to blame for this failed deal, fans of the character were quick to voice their displeasure of Sony’s decision. Many attributed their desire to see the character stay in the MCU to Sony’s past attempts to strike gold with their own Spidey franchise (The Amazing Spider-Man series) and the abysmal Spider-Man 3.

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland recently spoke with GQ about this whole situation, stating that he believes the future of the Spider-Man character is safe with Sony:

“I’ve truly had the time of my life, and in so many respects, they have made my dreams come true as an actor. Sony has also been really good to me, and the global success of Spider-Man: Far From Home is a real testament to their support, skill and commitment. The legacy and future of Spidey rests in Sony’s safe hands. I really am nothing but grateful, and I’ve made friends for life along the way.”
