With the ongoing pandemic having shaken up so many different industries, it’s no wonder that the rush to make streaming services was so prescient. In the age where fans don’t want to pay for every little title or new service to watch a new show, it becomes easier to sign with established services. As the year past was filled with the start and launch of so many new multi platformed streaming options, it’s certainly becoming more obvious how much the industry has reverted to a cable box model.

Yet, there are still some producers that are taking a different approach amongst the scramble to premiere their services and recoup 100% of the cost like Disney with their premier access charging upwards of $30. In recent memory, Netflix has retained its status as being the most recognizable and popular service around and now they will have more content than ever. Locking down a multi-year deal to premier new content, Sony has signed with Netflix to deliver many upcoming films produced by the company including Morbius and Uncharted.

Starting in 2022, Netflix will be the first US streaming home for Sony Pictures films following their theatrical releases. Get ready for UNCHARTED, MORBIUS, BULLET TRAIN & WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING, plus future sequels to VENOM, JUMANJI, BAD BOYS & SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

Since the mid-2000’s Sony has partnered with Lionsgate’s subsidiary Starz to produce Video On Demand streaming rights. Now that the times have changed and the tides move to a streaming dominate space, Sony is seeing the writing on the wall. Netflix however is a big winner in this as well, the traffic the upcoming and yet-to-be-announced content is great for them after losing access to various Disney properties and even the Office late last year. While the streaming service has by no means faltered due to the rise of other players in the industry, it does bring into question the volatility of the market and the sustainability.

For corporate Disney, the decision is easiest as the content flow is easiest to maintain. Yet, with newcomers like HBO Max setting records and Paramount Plus promising new films a month after their theater debut is great competition fodder. With the Sony deal set into place, the guarantee of seeing these upcoming films on the service next year is a great new addition to Netflix’s always-growing library.
